Torys Advising Wi-LAN on Hostile Bid for 'Patent Troll' Rival Mosaid:
Call it the other side of the patent boom.

In the wake of Google's announcement that it has reached an agreement to acquire Motorola Mobility Holdings for $12.4 billion—in large part as a way of bolstering its patent portfolio—a so-called patent troll known for bedeviling big tech companies with licensing demands and lawsuit threats has made some news of its own.

Wi-LAN Inc. announced Wednesday that it is pursuing a $490 million hostile takeover of rival Mosaid Technologies. The move, Wi-LAN said in a statement, is aimed at extracting lucrative licensing deals from technology manufacturers as patent valuations continue to soar, Reuters reported.
